Customer Actuated Sound – Definition and Origins
In 2001 General Motors was consolidating noise and vibration expertise into one center from the activities that had formerly been under the management of the various car and truck groups. Some of these product groups had sporadically undertaken sound quality projects on topics such as door closing sounds, power window sounds etc. but there had not been a consistent on-going activity. The 2001 consolidation seemed to be the appropriate and opportune time to organize a small group that would focus on these topics in a systematic way. Creating a list of systems that would be the group’s responsibilities happened quickly but finding a name to describe the group did not. The Definition and Origins of CAS (PDF) gives a brief account of how and why the term CAS came to be.
